The scholarship is started for new worldwide students and those already studying at eligible Irish universities.
New candidates can apply for research master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral programs in any field.
The scholarship is competitive, with an 18% success rate over the past five years.
The Irish Research Council does not require IELTS/TOEFL, but candidates should check the particular requirements of the university they’re applying to.
You don’t need to be a registered student at an eligible Higher Education Institute (HEI) before applying for the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship.

Degree Type and Duration:

Benefits (For Masters, and Doctoral):
The scholarship is worth up to €31,000 per year.
- Selected students will receive a yearly stipend of €22,000.
- They will also get €3,250 per year for research expenses.
- Candidates will have the opportunity to study at top universities in Ireland.
- The scholarship also covers tuition fees, including non-EU fees, up to €5,750 per year.
Benefits (For Post Doctoral):
- A stipend of €46,305 in the first year and €47,879 in the second year.
- Employer’s PRSI contribution.
- You can receive up to €5,000 per year for eligible research expenses.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The scholarship is open to applicants from all countries, including Ireland.
- To access the application form, applicants must first pass an initial eligibility quiz on the online system.
- There is no age limit.
- Students need a Bachelor’s degree to apply for a Master’s program and a Master’s degree to apply for a PhD.
- Students who are waiting for their results can apply, but they must provide a provisional certificate from their home institution.
- Applicants must list their overall degree results on the application form, which must be approved by the host institution and confirmed with an official transcript.
- All applicants need a supervisor who will guide them on their research projects during their studies in Ireland.
- Applicants must be fluent in English. The Irish Research Council doesn’t require IELTS/TOEFL, but it’s important to check if the Irish university you’re applying to requires it.
