Overview of the Program

The Kyoto Retreat offers Artists, Curators, and Writers an opportunity to spend TIME in Japan for Research and Exploration. It’s all about enjoying, resting, researching, and reflecting.

  • For Artists: Kyoto’s Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji temples show the beauty of traditional Japanese design. The way light and shadow play, along with the detailed buildings and carvings, can spark fresh artistic ideas.

  • For Curators: Kyoto feels like a museum in itself, with living traditions like tea ceremonies, flower arranging (ikebana), and Noh theater. Local galleries and studios show both old and new Japanese art, offering insight into how it has changed over time.

  • For Writers: Kyoto’s peaceful gardens and cozy streets—especially beautiful in autumn—are perfect for writing. Walking through places like the bamboo forest in Arashiyama or the Philosopher’s Path creates the perfect mood for thinking and writing about nature, life, and meaning.
